Almaty, Kazakhstan

Alpine meadows and Tian Shan peaks frame this former capital where Soviet-era bazaars sprawl beneath mountains, and plov sizzles in courtyard teahouses. Cable cars climb to pine forests overlooking the city's eclectic Russian, Chinese and Central Asian blend.
