The 10,000 hectare reserve is situated in the historical town of Touws River, nestled in a valley between the Langeberg and Outeniqua mountains in the Karoo region. The choice of color is said to be due to the fact that all houses had to be white while rented. When this rule was eventually lifted and slaves were allowed to buy the lots, all the houses were painted bright colors by their owners as an expression of their freedom.
