St. George Monastery and the Communist Bunkers The tour starts from Sarandë. Transport from the starting point. A walking tour along a section of coastline south of Albania overlooking the Ionian Sea and Corfu island on one side and Butrint lake on the other. A trail once heavily monitored by military forces during communism when they built massive coastal defense structures for fear of invasion from the sea. Enjoy refreshments at a local café or tavern offering stunning panoramic views over this picturesque landscape. Continue your hike toward one of southern Albania's ancient religious sites; The Saint George Orthodox Church which dates all the way back to between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. This beautifully maintained church sits atop a hill providing some of the best vantage points around these parts. Return journey through Saranda brings our adventure full circle. Butrint the ancient city, Blue Eye Spring and Lekursi Cstle. Layers of different architecture influenced by from Greeks, Romans, Byzantine, Venetians and Ottomans. One of the oldest cities built by Ilirians in South of Albania. An interesting visit in one of the most beautiful archaeological sites in South Albania.
