Lake Mývatn & Goðafoss from Akureyri

Lake Mývatn and the surroundings are a must-see while exploring the North! First, we drive along the coast of Eyjafjörður, one of the longest fjords in Iceland. We start with a stop at Goðafoss waterfall, one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Iceland, en route to Lake Mývatn; this lake was formed by a massive basalt lava eruption about 2,300 years ago, and its surrounding landscapes feature dominant volcanic features such as lava columns and vent fissures devoid of roots. Next, we visit the Grjótagjá rock cavern and make a pitstop at the hydrothermal field located near Hverarönd in Námafjall, then head to the nature spa for an opportunity to unwind in steaming pools or soak in thermal waters—you may even opt for a relaxing bathside massage there. As we journey home, we encounter the distinctive black sand dunes known as Dimmuborgir that rank amongst the top visitor draws around Lake Mývatn. Along the road, we’ll pause briefly at Skútustaðagígar pseudocrater fields too. Finally, before returning fully southwards towards your accommodation base, we'll have time to pull off again just beyond Eyjafjarðarsveit so everyone aboard has their picture taken looking out across the bay toward bustling Akureyri town below.
