Day 1 – Arrival in Addis Ababa and City Tour
Arrive at Bole International Airport and meet your guide. Explore Addis Ababa with a half-day city tour including the National Museum to see Lucy, Holy Trinity Cathedral, and Entoto Hills viewpoint. Optional visit to local markets for crafts and souvenirs. Overnight in Addis Ababa.
Day 2 – Addis Ababa to Gorgora (Lake Tana)
Drive northwest to Gorgora on the shores of Lake Tana, Ethiopia’s largest lake. En route, admire scenic highlands and rural villages. Optional boat trip on Lake Tana to visit historic monasteries on the islands. Overnight in Gorgora lodge or hotel.
Day 3 – Gorgora to Gondar
Drive to Gondar, the former imperial capital. Visit the Royal Enclosure, Fasil Ghebbi castle, Debre Berhan Selassie Church with its famous ceiling murals, and other historical sites. Enjoy the town’s unique medieval architecture and local markets. Overnight in Gondar hotel.
Day 4 – Gondar to Lalibela
Drive or take a domestic flight to Lalibela, famous for its rock-hewn churches. Explore the UNESCO World Heritage site, including Bete Medhane Alem, Bete Maryam, and Bete Giyorgis. Learn about the historical and religious significance of Lalibela’s medieval Christian sites. Overnight in Lalibela lodge or hotel.
Day 5 – Lalibela to Axum
Drive or fly to Axum, the ancient capital of the Aksumite Kingdom. Visit the obelisks, St. Mary of Zion Church, and archeological sites including ancient tombs and ruins. Learn about the historical and religious importance of Axum in Ethiopian history. Overnight in Axum hotel.
Day 6 – Axum to Addis Ababa and Departure
Take a domestic flight back to Addis Ababa. Optional stops for coffee tasting or local souvenirs along the way. Connect with your international departure, concluding the Northern Ethiopia Historic Route tour.
