We'll proceed to view the 14th Century Medersa Bounania (Quranic school) passing through Talaa Saghira street towards Place des Nejarines and fondouk du bois (carpenters’ guild hall); here you may take photos while viewing Henna souk from within. We stroll along Attarine souk known for its spice shops before reaching Karaouiyne mosque which was established in 859 AD making it the oldest existing educational institution worldwide; this great monument was built by a Tunisian woman named Fatima Al Fihri. Nearby there is another interesting site called Sefelarine square showcasing metal workers who work with brass and pewter. The Chouara tanneries located nearby hold international fame due their unique process of tanning leather using natural materials only. There are numerous other landmarks such as Mausoleum of Moulay Idriss II fountains offering beautiful views across Fes medina area. At the conclusion of our journey, we shall drop off each participant back to his/her hotel or riad.
This is the best preserved medieval city not only in Morocco but in the Muslim world. It is regarded by many as the cultural and spiritual heart of the country. In the morning after breakfast, you will visit the Royal palace of Fes, the Jewish quarters and then have a splendid panoramic view of the old city. After exploring the ceramic and mosaic workshop just outside the city, You will explore the ancient medina and admire the three main components of the Arabic/Andalusian architecture: ceramic art, carving of the plaster and carving of the wood. You'll be surprised as I introduce you to the oldest continuous University mosque in the world. While strolling slowly in the narrow alleyways and markets of the old city, you will discover the medieval Koranic schools that housed students who came to study in Fes during the medieval time: Medrasa Bou Inania or Medrasa Sherratine.
